Weekly film analysis - Paddington 2

This is the sequel to the 2014 hit Paddington based on the children's books by Michael Bond. This is a very funny and witty film that is just as good as the original and has a stellar cast making cameos along the way. The story is about Paddington(voiced by Ben Whishaw ) and him wanting to get a book of London for his Aunt Lucy but the rather ageing actor Phoenix Buchanan(Hugh Grant) steals the book for his own  plan which leads to Paddington being jailed and a lot of fun along the way.

The film is shot very beautifully and all the scenes have a fantasy or heighten reality making London look picturesque and like one of the best and most exciting places on earth and a funfair with bright and vibrant and even making prison look joyous with the use of colour and cinematography and sometimes the film seems Wes Anderson inspired with pastille colours and buildings looking like dolls houses cut in half to show all the workings inside. All these make the inner child come out of everyone and bring the audience to feel wonder and amazement. They will also feel this with Paddington as the CGI is very convincing and while he does not look exactly anatomically correct he is the embodiment of all the joy in the world and is a great protagonist.

The film is very traditionally shot and just uses establishing shots to show where the audience are ,close ups to see the characters face expression and so on but it does all of these very well and puts the audience's attention on the right things at the right moment.

Music is also used very well in the film bringing the joy to all of it and it uses a wide range from simple backing music matching with scenes for things like sadness or happiness but also has some musical outbursts where a band , the same from the prior film, comes and joins in and this fits in very well with the heightened reality aspects and there is even a musical theatre inspired moment featured in the film.

You can tell the director, Paul king, has had a clear vision he wants to put across and deals with quite slapstick comedy as he has also directed Come fly with me and The Mighty Boosh so he is used to quite over the top comedy.

All the cast are also very good in the film and are not scared of making fun of themselves and the cast is a who's who of faces faces all delivering very funny and good performances.

Overall this film is a very fun and well made piece that is just as good as the original and you can tell everyone involved has put hard work in and had a lot of fun doing so.
