Scene analysis - Under The Skin

Beach Scene

This scene comes about third  of the way through the film and we  have already seen Johanssons character picking up a man and taking him to her void room so we assume that she is the beach to do the same. First of all we see a family  of a mum,dad dog and baby by the sea and they are quite a distance away and only in the background. Then we see her face a man swimming in the sea. The scene escalates and ultimately it is about humanity and how far people will go for one and other and it shows how part of man kinds downfall is there humanity and wanting to help. It is also about how nature is a force that humans can not stop.

The scene takes place in a very rural and hardy part if Scotland where the landscape looks menacing and overruling and the waves crashing already look like a bad threat. The predator in this scene is no longer Johansson but it is nature however she still plays a key role in the scene. When she talks to the swimmer she still seems slightly robotic and looks very much out of place in her pink top and fur coat. The audience see again she is trying to seduce the man but then there is a scream and we see the mother trying to rescue the dog from the choppy sea. This is the first that we see how dangerous nature but also how humans always want to help with both the swimmer and dad going to save her. Johanssons character just stands there and watches and takes the position of the audience as they are sitting being spectators and not helping, merely just viewing . The rescue does not go to plan ultimately both the Mum and Dad die in the sea.  Johanssons predator returns and she drags the unconscious simmer. All while this happens we hear the screams  of the baby and this shows the innocence of humanity and   how vulnerable they are. This also shows Johanssons inhuman like qualities as any human would rescue the baby but she does not. Sound is also effectively used as there is the constant glaring sound of the waves crashing.
Also this comes at almost the turning point for Johanssons character as  we see her looking at humanity and subconsciously taking it in and learning from it.

End scene

This is the last scene of the film and in it we see Johanssons characters true identity. This scene is very effective as her character turns from predator to prey and this gradually happens through the second half. Again her character seems very out of place in this landscape and does not fit in. This scene also gives us another side to human kind and how ruthless they can be and brutish. We are positioned on  her side through out and feel real empathy for her as this man is chasing her unprovoked and even though we have seen her do similar to other men, this is less willing and she is presented to be much more vulnerable.
Dialogue is not used in this scene at ball and this adds to the drama as it lets you see her emotions and expressions and feels much more genuine.
The nature again seems quite intimating in this scene with trees towering overhead and the weather being quite grey as well as it seeming like a maze she is trapped in and can not escape.
It suggests that one of mens troubles is lust and how intimating they are and also how vulnerable a woman can be. The man chasing her seems to be a very stereotypical man who is quite large and brutish. He wants to have her way with her but she can not do anything as she is not quite human so does not even know what is really happening. The absence of music and dialogue  also make the scene much more uncomfortable to watch  as we can see and hear exactly what is going on. The final element of it also shows how humanity is quite fearful of the unknown and its scares them, which then results in his reaction. Johanssons character is ultimately left broken both mentally and physically.

Overall the film is about humanity and not really aliens. It as about there flaws like lust, fear and being a predator but also there more positive points like being helpful and trying to show compassion.
