Trainspotting scene analysis

Opening Scene

The first shot of the film already makes the audience see how Renton is a bit of a lose canon as we see him running down Princes Street in Edinburgh. This also helps to establish where we are as people familiar with Scotland would know this area. The audience so not know why he is running yet so it gives them an enigma to try and workout what is happening. As well through the scene Renton gives us his 'Choose life' speech which is about modern life and how people are quite dependent on owning things and how you are you by what you own, but Renton doesn't really want this and the only factor in his life he wants is heroin.
We are also introduced to Rentons friends via the use of a five aside football match. We see how they play in the match whether being by the rules like Tommy,Cheating like Sick boy and Begbie or being absolutely clueless like Spud. It freezes on the moments when we see these traits in their characters and gives the audience an idea of how they will be through out the film.
The use of ubeat music also shows us the joy that all the characters feel once they have taken and a tracking shot is used to show us around the junkie flat and the hyper-reality of it all with bright colour and light coming from unknown places. Foreshadowing is also used in this scene as we see baby Dawn and there is no one near her or looking after her and this could show the negligence she has.
Comedy is also effectively used in this scene as we see the characters rather dazed personality after using heroin and how they have become much more care free. There is comedy as well when we see Begbie and he says he doesn't want to take drugs as it will poison his body but while he says this he is smoking and drinking so this moment would be slight dramatic irony for the audience.

Detox Scene

This scene comes from the middle of the film where Renton is slowly coming off from his use of heroin overdose and is being looked after by his parents. We firstly see that the use of drugs has made him more helpless and he is being carried into his bedroom by his dad like he is holding a child. We also see Rentons possible childlikeness in his room as it looks very much like one of child and seems that he has maybe not been there for a while and left home early.
While Rentons body is slowly coming down from the heroin we see some of his hallucinations. What is going on in these hallucinations is never directly clear some of it is calling back to previous parts of the film like when Diane is sitting on the end of his bed singing the song she sang after the night he slept with her and he keeps remembering that what he did with her was illegal so that is why it is on his conscience. We also see Spud sitting on his wardrobe in a prison uniform and this shows the guilt he feels towards Sud being in prison rather than himself. We also get some foreshadowing as we see Tommy and he looks very rough and we see what a drug addiction has done to him which has been indirectly caused by Renton. Current moments of his life are also present as we see his parents on a quiz show and the questions are about HIV and shows he will have his test soon to see if he has it but also shows how his parents are quite worried for him. This scene is very surreal with the use of an upbeat dance track continuously going on and fast paced editing. The most memorable moment of the scene is when we see baby Dawn crawling on the ceiling amd Renton is screaming in fear and pain.

End Scene

The end scene shows the friends after they have completed a drug deal and also after Begbie had a brawl in a pub. In the first half of the scene we see Renton wandering around the hotel room and trying to prize the bag of money from Begbies hands. We see him successfully do this and then get out of the room victorious but he turns back and sees Spud laying there looking disappointed that he has stolen the money and this part is very effective as we see a slight hesitance in Rentons actions and there is lots of non verbal communication between them about whether this decision is wrong or right but ultimately we see Renton has the higher status and chooses to do not what is right but what is best for him. Then we see him leave London and simultaneously Begbies quite exaggerated ,which is typical for him, reaction to the situation as he trashed the hotel room. The music in this scene is also quite upbeat and has a much more 90s feel to it which shows the future that Renton wants and how he wont really look back. Aswell he repeats his 'Choose life' speech and this time instead of sort of taking the mickey out of modern life and the consumerism of people,he seems to say that he wants this life and to have a family and own useless things. This shows a change in his character as we see he is not as dependant on his friends and where as previously we have seen the family life style looks quite cramped, he wants this and thinks it will be good as the world is evolving and become a different place.
