The 2018 Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, took place on March 4th and this year it marked history being the 90th awards but also because these events mark a changing time in history. Within the past few months people in Hollywood and many other working bodies have spoken out about the sexual abuse and misconduct of the higher authority figures. People like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Woody Allen to name only a few have used their power in a terrible way for their own selfish needs and have now been shunned from the limelight. The awards this year marked a turning point for the Me Too campaign and have helped put a light to this dark side of the business.
As you can imagine this ceremony had a very political and important tone to it. It celebrated not only the creatives in Hollywood but especially the women in it.The awards were also very important this year as it Marked Greta Gerwig only the fifth every female director nominated for best director for Lady Bird and also marked Rachel Morrison the first ever female cinematographer to be nominated for best cinematography for Mudbound. Female empowerment was also represented when Frances McDormand won the Oscar fir Three Billboards and in her speech she encouraged everywoman who was nominated that evening to stand up and be celebrated for their achievements.
Other awards in the evening went to Gary Oldman for his performance as Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour, Alison Janney for her role in I,Tonya, Sam Rockwell for his performance in Three Billboards, and Guillermo del Toro for best director for The Shape of Water which also won best picture.
Another winner at the ceremony that has not had as much limelight as these other categories was for best live action short. This year it went to a British film called the Silent Child. The film tells the story of a deaf 4 year old called Libby who is living in a world of silents that she cant understand and then a social worker helps teach her sign language. The film was written by and starred Rachel Shenton known for being in Hollyoaks and is about her own experience living with parents who became deaf and was directed by her partner Chris Overton. The film shows a life that is not really represented in cinema and from the perspective of the sufferer. What is also interesting is that the girl who played Libby,Maisie Sly, is deaf herself and in films you never really get disabled people playing disabled roles.
Again Robbie this is good reportage of the event and what happened, going forward you need to use CCCEO. Content, Context, Comparison, Example and Opinion. What is your opinion Robbie of the whole event? What purpose does it serve? What would happen if the Oscars stopped happening? I want you to start questioning the status quo a lot more Robbie on the page as you already do in the class.
